History of rhetoric vs. composition
Emig states that the study of rhetoric was to train the upper classes, whereas, composition was to provide basic literacy (15)
Cicero outlines the traditional writing organization, but these elements don't address the affective domain of the writer, which would speak to style and voice; this way of working is pre-psychology (16).

Theory of the creative process
Emig discusses Graham Wallas (1926) in the Art of Thought. In it, Wallas refers to German physicist, Hermann von Helmholz, and how he came up with his ideas:
1) Preparation: thorough investigation across disciplines
2) Incubation: Going away from the problem and not conciously thinking about it
3) Illumination: Unexpected idea
4) Verification (a step added by Wallas): Checking the idea through testing.
Emig states, "In the process of writing, revision seems to occupy the same place that verification holds in scientific and mathmematical inquiries (Emig, 1971, p. 17).
