Janet Emig became famous for writing, The Composing Process of Twelth Graders, in 1971. Since that time, she has been used as a inpsiration for teachers looking to think "outside of the box".
Emig views writing as an "enabling media". She expands on that idea with Lois Rosen in The English Journal:
"It makes possible getting certain work done in the world. Not only does it provide self-knowlede, but it's also one way of changing the world. I don't know of any instances of changing the world by watching television or even reading alone" (The English Journal, p. 12)
